Día di Rincon – a day of culture, music and unity
Día di Rincon – A Day Full of Culture, Music, and Togetherness
Every year on April 30, the quiet town of Rincon transforms into the vibrant heart of Bonaire. Día di Rincon is a celebration like no other – a colorful tribute to tradition, culture, and connection. The streets come alive with music, dance, and the aromas of local delicacies. Young and old, men and women, visitors and locals – everyone joins in.
But what makes this day so special? We spoke with Desiree Marchena, a born-and-raised Bonairian who has participated in the parade several times.
“For me, Día di Rincon is one of the most beautiful events on Bonaire,” Desiree shares. “The atmosphere, the tradition, the togetherness – it’s truly something to be proud of.”
A Festival by and for Rincon
Día di Rincon originally started as a spontaneous neighborhood celebration on Queen’s Day. Neighbors would gather to cook outdoors, make music, and enjoy each other's company. What began as a small-scale event grew into one of the island’s largest cultural celebrations – now going strong for 36 years.
Throughout the village, you’ll find stalls offering local dishes, drinks, and handmade souvenirs. The highlight of the day is the colorful parade winding through the streets of Rincon: dance groups, dressed in beautiful costumes and carrying impressive props, celebrate Bonairian culture with joyful performances. Desiree herself joined the parade for the first time last year, walking along with the group called Den nos Zylea.
“With our group, we want to continue the tradition,” she says. “This year, our outfits are inspired by the Kibrahacha – a special local tree that blooms just a few days after rainfall. Just like our culture: resilient and vibrant.”
Come and Experience it Yourself
Día di Rincon is a chance to experience Bonaire’s culture in a way you won’t find anywhere else. A festive day centered around tradition, pride, and joy – where visitors are more than welcome.
“I hope that young Bonairians and visitors alike will learn to appreciate and respect our traditions and culture. And of course, enjoy it just as much as we do every year!”
